About the project

Giving young people the tools to forge their own path

Growing up, making choices, finding one’s place in society, entering the world of work or simply looking ahead to the future does not rely solely on knowledge or technical skills. Young people also need personal and social resources to better understand who they are, cope with change, make decisions and gradually build their own path.

This is where life skills come into their own.

Life skills encompass a range of abilities that enable people to cope better with everyday situations, develop their independence, communicate and cooperate with others, look after themselves and their resources, and also make choices and adapt to a constantly changing world. They are particularly important for young people who are shaping their identity and their future against a backdrop of rapid social, economic and professional change.

An approach centred on young people’s potential

The Life Skills for Youth (LS4YOU) project is based on a simple belief: every young person possesses resources, experiences and skills that can be harnessed to forge their own path.

Supporting young people is therefore not just about imparting knowledge or preparing them to meet the demands of the labour market. It is also about giving them the space and tools they need to get to know themselves better, identify their strengths, build their confidence, explore their possibilities and take charge of their own choices.

LS4YOU therefore offers a holistic approach to life skills, drawing in particular on positive psychology and design thinking. This combination enables us to build on young people’s resources and potential, whilst encouraging them to experiment, reflect, test ideas and gradually develop solutions tailored to their own circumstances.

A European collaboration with complementary areas of expertise

LS4YOU brings together five partners from four European countries – France, Spain, Austria and Slovenia – with complementary profiles, experiences and areas of expertise in the fields of youth, education, support and skills development.

This diversity is a real asset to the project: it enables the perspectives, practices and realities of different European contexts to be brought together around a common objective: to better support young people in developing their life skills and help them shape their own paths.

What makes this approach different?

The LS4YOU approach does not view life skills as a list of competencies to be acquired once and for all. Instead, they are seen as dynamic resources that evolve with each individual’s experiences and choices.

The project thus seeks to move beyond an approach focused solely on employability, to consider young people’s development holistically: their personality, their ability to look after themselves, to make the most of their resources, to manage their daily lives and to make choices for their future.

Resources to support young people

LS4YOU is aimed primarily at young people, but also at the professionals who support them: youth workers, educators, trainers, counsellors, organisations and other stakeholders in education and support services.

The website brings together resources and tools to explore life skills in a practical, participatory way that is tailored to young people’s realities.

Whether you are a young person looking to better understand your strengths and potential, or a professional wishing to enhance your support practices, LS4YOU invites you to explore, experiment and forge your own path.
